AI automation for garages & mot centres
No trade on this page has revenue as predictable as a garage's. Every car you MOT has a legally fixed date twelve months later on which that customer must spend money somewhere. Whether they spend it with you comes down to whether anyone contacted them first.
What the day actually looks like
A garage runs on ramp utilisation, and the ramp is either earning or it is not. The awkward part is that the person who can answer the phone properly is usually the person under a car, and the front desk — if there is one — is dealing with somebody collecting keys. So the booking call rings out, and a customer whose MOT is due next week rings the fast-fit down the road instead. That is a booking lost for a fixed, known, legally-mandated piece of work.
The reminder problem is the big one and it is almost comically solvable. Every MOT expires on a known date. Every service interval is either mileage or time based. Both are sitting in your records. A garage that writes to a customer three weeks before expiry, with a link to book, captures work that a garage relying on the DVLA text simply does not. It is the single most reliable revenue automation available to any business in this list.
Then there is the mid-job authorisation call, which is a genuine friction point unique to the motor trade. You find additional work, you need approval, and the customer is at work and does not pick up. The car sits. The ramp is blocked. A message with the finding, a price and a one-tap approval turns a half-day of dead time into a signed-off job.
Where the money leaks
The MOT that expired somewhere else
The most predictable revenue in the trade, lost purely because nobody wrote to the customer in time. A reminder three weeks out with a booking link is the fix, and it runs itself.
The booking call that rang out
Nobody can leave a car mid-job to answer the phone. Without an answering layer, that booking goes to whoever picks up first.
The additional work nobody could authorise
A blocked ramp waiting on a callback is pure lost capacity. Instant authorisation by message turns a dead afternoon into billed hours.
The advisory nobody followed up
Every MOT advisory is pre-qualified future work with a date attached. A follow-up before the next test is one of the easiest wins a garage has.
What it is costing, roughly
Here is the arithmetic, using figures for garages & mot centres as a starting point. Take 9 missed or late enquiries a week — the calls that come in while you are working, the messages answered too late, the quotes that went quiet. At an average value of £240 and a 50% close rate, that is roughly £4,676 a month, or about £56,112 a year, going to whoever answered first.
These are the starting numbers we load the calculator with for an independent garage — a blended figure across MOTs, servicing and the repair work that comes off the back of them. They are a starting point, not a claim about your garage. If most of your revenue is repair rather than test, raise the value.
Run it with your own numbers in the calculator → (it opens pre-filled with the figures above, and nothing is stored unless you ask us to email you the result).
What we would build first
We do not install everything at once. For garages & mot centres the order below is usually the one that pays back fastest, and most businesses start with the first item alone.
MOT, service and advisory reminders on autopilot
The highest-return automation in the motor trade, without much competition. Set once, and every customer hears from you before their expiry date rather than after it.
Service: Lead Nurture Sequences
Bookings taken while the whole team is under a car
Takes registration, work required, and a slot, straight into your diary — including the calls that arrive at 8am before anyone is on the desk.
Service: AI Receptionist
Ramp slots customers can book themselves
Correct durations for MOT versus service versus diagnostic, so the day does not end up with a two-hour job in a thirty-minute slot.
Service: Appointment Booking Automation
Reviews that win the next local search
Requested automatically at collection. Independent garages compete against chains almost entirely on local trust, and reviews are where that lives.
Service: Automated Review Generation
The time it gives back
Revenue is only half of it. These are the jobs that quietly eat the evenings and the gaps between jobs, and what changes when they run themselves.
| Task | Today | Automated |
|---|---|---|
| MOT expiry reminders | Left to the DVLA text, or nothing | Sent three weeks out with a booking link |
| Taking booking calls | Rings out during busy hours | Answered and booked automatically |
| Authorising extra work | Ramp blocked waiting for a callback | Message with price, one-tap approval |
| Chasing advisories | Almost never done | Followed up before the next test |
When it is not the right answer
We would rather talk you out of the wrong automation than sell it to you.
- It will not diagnose a fault. It captures the symptom and the registration and books the diagnostic.
- It cannot price a repair it has not seen. Where you are happy with fixed prices — MOT, standard servicing — it will quote them; everything else is booked in.
- It will not fix a demand problem. If the phone is not ringing at all, automation has nothing to work with — that is a marketing job first.
- It is only as good as the information you give it. Vague pricing and unclear service areas in, vague answers out.
FAQs
Where does it get MOT expiry dates from?
From your own records of the work you did, which is the reliable source. Where a lookup by registration is available and appropriate, that can supplement it.
Can customers approve extra work through it?
Yes — a message with what you found, the price and a clear approval. It is one of the biggest recoveries of lost ramp time we see in this trade.
We are a fast-fit rather than a full garage. Does it still fit?
The reminder engine matters even more, because your repeat cycle is shorter and more predictable. The booking side simplifies to slot length and tyre or brake type.
Will it try to quote repairs over the phone?
Only the fixed-price work you tell it about. It is built to say ‘we need to look at it’ rather than to invent a number that costs you the customer's trust later.
